My final blog of 2017 is one to look ahead rather than at the year just gone by.
I feel that 2018 is going to be a great year for me personally, and I hope for Engage as well. There is so much to look forward to, to be grateful for and to be excited about.
Firstly, I have a baby due in Jan. My third (and final!) little girl. I must say that - with two little madams already - I did have my fingers crossed for a boy this time around. I grew up with two sisters and a strong female influence, so I was hoping to balance it out a little bit. However, it seems I just have to accept the fact that my life (outside of work of course!) is destined to be dominated by the female of the species.
On the plus side, I look forward to the years when they are all out shopping together whilst I play golf, or watch arsenal, or have weekends away with the boys…. Yes, I hear you shouting about how I will need to pay for that shopping (not to mention the THREE weddings I already need to be saving for) but let me at least take a minute to envisage the quiet times. The girls are excited, and it will be nice to not have a pregnant, extremely irritable and tired wife who I know loves me but hasn’t really seemed to like me very much for the past few months!!!
I can’t wait to see a full year of trading with Engage. Our accounts run January to December, so we’ll file half year accounts at the beginning of the year, and I’m excited for when we can run metrics on a 12-month basis to get a full picture of our performance. I want to develop the brand, the voice, get creative with what we’re doing - and 2018 is going to be the start of those processes.
My good friend and accountant Josh Finn and I are starting a specialist business protection business called Polar Protect. It is going to target small to medium businesses, providing shareholder protection, key man cover and relevant life cover. It’s an exciting project and a market that we feel is a little underserved from our research. I’ll no doubt expand on that in due course.
I’ve managed to book in a couple of holidays for next year as well. We’ve booked to go to Greece in May, we’ve found a family-friendly resort which looks great, and we’ll no doubt be in need of a short break by then with the baby being nearly 5 months. I’ve also booked a two-week break in Spain in the summer, which feels like a very long time for me to be away for. I will no doubt begin to regret that decision closer to the time!
And so, as we close on 2017 and look forward to 2018, we can look back for a moment at what has been a truly transitional year. From starting in June, to having 40 client families in December - we’ve come a long way in a short space of time. There has been so much progress in the last 6 months that it feels difficult to even process properly. However, the life of a business owner is such that, whilst you can glimpse into the past to look at things you did well and things you did badly, you must keep looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead.
I’d like to say a huge thank you to anyone who has read any of my blogs over the last 6 months. My writing style has been just to say what’s on my brain at the time and hope that people will connect with my thoughts/feelings. Hopefully I will provide some value at some point!
Finally, I’d like to wish all our clients, friends, readers and our corporate partners a brilliant festive period and a happy, healthy and successful new year, from myself and everyone at Engage.
